Efficiency…Five Truths That Will Surprise You

Efficiency is a quality that most people don’t have an argument with.

To me the word conjures up a vision of a conveyor belt with components getting added sequentially until the finished product rolls off the production line and into it’s final package.

How could anyone argue against efficiency? Why would we not want projects to be completed in full and done quickly?

Here are five truths that will surprise you. Or at least make you think a little.

From the world of cows and people.

Truth: Those who aren’t efficient aspire to being more so.It’s not a natural given for everybody.

e.g. “pathfinders” by their very nature are less than efficient. It’s like we are thrashing about in a maize paddock trying to find new original undiscovered paths.

Truth: Efficiency for us can be found through working with and cribbing from mentors and coaches who we respect and resonate with. Who have already done what we are trying to do.

Or partnering up with those that create systems easily and quickly.

Truth: Efficiency can come via technology. Like an automatic cow drafter or teat sprayer.

Or the template that once written can be reused time and time again.

Truth: Cows still in milk use less energy to put on body condition than cows that are dry.

Only 40-50 MJ of metabolizable energy or M.E. is required per kg of liveweight for a lactating cow.

Compare this with a cow that is dry. That same kilogram will take 75 MJ of ME.

Truth: The most efficient source of glucose in a cow is starch not sugar. For example the starch that is found in grain like maize silage or tapioca or fodder beet.

Starch fermenting bacteria in the rumen convert it to propionic acid. This short chain fatty acid  is absorbed into the bloodstream and travels to the liver to be converted into glucose.
